Perception, Reality... and Reality

10/19/2007 4:21:50 PM
U.S. Stock markets finished significantly lower today, Friday, October 19, 2007.

By Morgan Lee

Perception and reality are often two totally separate entities.

For example, the public perception is that the University of Notre
Dame has a top-notch football program. The reality is that the Fighting
Irish are in the midst of one of their worst seasons of all time, led
by players who wouldn’t start for any other major program in the nation
and by a coach who may be wishing he’d never left the NFL. (I mean come
on, wouldn’t you rather be with the 6-0 New England Patriots than the
1-6 Fighting Irish?)

But that’s far from the only example. Here’s another one from the
financial world: The perception is that the Federal Reserve's recent
interest rate cut "rescued the markets."

Reality is the chart you see below:

It's all too clear that the Fed helped these major indexes for all of... a few hours?

In fact, the only index that hasn’t more than completely retraced
the gains that immediately followed the rate cuts is the S&P 500 –
and as we saw today (Oct. 19), even that may not take much longer.

Meanwhile, this week’s continued losses in the Dow, S&P and
Nasdaq are just another big dose of reality for all those who think the
Fed can create turns or trends in the markets.

The trick to successful investing is being able to separate reality
from perception – fact from fiction. Our chart is an important step in
the right direction – let us show you the rest of the way. To learn
more about the reality of the markets, just follow the steps below.
